The region, framed by the World Heritage Site of the Dolomites, is Reinhold Messner's birthplace, the first mountaineer to have climbed all of the world's “eight-thousanders”. Characters such as Armin Zoggeler, the king of luge, Oscar-winning musician Giorgio Moroder and Otzi, the iceman who lived in the area five thousand years ago, also originate from Alto Adige.
